Happy New Year!
It's officially 2011- pretty crazy and exciting!
There are so many things to do and resolve to do that it can be quite overwhelming. I have several resolutions for 2011 but one of them includes you (or maybe just me talking to myself thinking others are reading my thoughts).
I have been a Christian for 14 years and unfortunately I have not always done such a good job at sharing God's Word with those around me. The basics: I believe in God. I believe in an afterlife wherein you either spend eternity with God or without God. I believe that the Bible was written by men but through the inspiration of God. I believe that the Bible is our only tool to know what God wants of us and how to make Him happy (and thus how we might be able to spend eternity with Him). Based on that chain of beliefs, you can see why it would be important for me to share with everyone His Word and study it every day.
Enter: 2011 New Years Resolution. I will read through the Bible in one year and I will briefly blog about each day's reading. If you share a belief in God and would like to join me, that would be awesome! If you do not share this belief in God or maybe my belief in the necessity of God's Word, I would encourage you to join me also. This might sound like a daunting task at first and when I sit and think about it I can get overwhelmed too BUT then I thought about some of the works of literature I've read and compared it to the Bible, and it doesn't seem so long or arduous. For example, some of you might have read the Harry Potter series, there are (according to answers.com) a total of 1,090,739 words in all the books combined. Compare that to the mere 788,280 that biblebelievers.com says are in the Bible and it seems more manageable- especially when broken up over a YEAR! If you don't have a Bible- never fear, I'll be putting up links to the readings every week so you can read on your computer! :)
When thinking about how to read through the Bible, I had a few choices to choose from: 1. read straight through: Genesis-Revelation, 2. Split the daily reading into two parts and read one part from the Old Testament and one part from the New Testament and 3. Read through chronologically (the books of the Bible are not in chronological order). I've decided to read through the Bible in chronological order merely because I like to see things on a timeline- so I can know what events happened relative to other events.
The schedule I'll be following can be found at the following website: http://www.ewordtoday.com/year/nasb/cjan01.htm
As I stated previously, I'll be reading and briefly blogging my thoughts/questions everyday (yes, even after 14 years of being a Christian I still have questions and don't understand everything 100%). I hope you'll decide to read along with me and also share any thoughts or questions you have as well so we can get a dialogue going. If you don't care to share- that's cool too :)
I pray this year will be a great year for us all and will provide many opportunities for us to grow!
